God not needed for creation?

I know this is a touchy subject and I don't want this turning into some sort of flame war, but I'm curious what your opinion is on whether their is a god or not.
Stephen Hawking has lately stated that there was no need for a God to start creation.

British physicist and mathematician Stephen Hawking says no, arguing in his new book that there need not be a God behind the creation of the universe.
The concept is explored in "The Grand Design," excerpts of which were printed in the British newspaper The Times on Thursday. The book, written with fellow physicist Leonard Mlodinow, is scheduled to be published by Bantam Press on Sept. 9.
"The Grand Design," which the publishers call Hawking's first major work in nearly a decade, challenges Isaac Newton's theory God must have been involved in creation because our solar system couldn't have come out of chaos simply through nature.
But Hawking says it isn't that simple. To understand the universe, it's necessary to know both how and why it behaves the way it does, calling the pursuit "the Ultimate Question of Life, the Universe, and Everything."
"We shall attempt to answer it in this book," he wrote. "Unlike the answer given in 'The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy,' ours won't be simply '42.'"
Hawking, who is renowned for his work on black holes, said the 1992 discovery of another planet orbiting a star other than the sun makes "the coincidences of our planetary conditions ... far less remarkable and far less compelling as evidence that the Earth was carefully designed just to please us human beings."
In his best-selling 1988 book "A Brief History of Time," Hawking appeared to accept the possibility of a creator, saying the discovery of a complete theory would "be the ultimate triumph of human reason – for then we should know the mind of God."

My personal opinion is that while there may be a higher power or 'God' they didn't have anything to do with creating us and they don't need our prayer to praise them constantly.
What do you guys think?

I beleive in a god/higher power, but not "The God"... As to Whether s/he created us or really give a shit about our tiny little planet - I doubt it.

Stephen Hawking is alright, but his material is half stolen :p Not to say he isn't on the right track or anything.

In my opinion, we aren't even close to understanding whats going on around us. We have barely even left our solar system. And when we did, we found there is this field just outside of Sol's gravity well that blocks transmissions from getting through... We're in a bubble. We basically haven't even left earth.

Every once in a while, I like to remind myself we aren't in the future yet. We can all shape that future.

Love the post mate.

very touchy subject indeed. i used to believe in god when i was a kid. now, not so much. the thought of something out there who is watching down on us just doesn't make much sense. but i have no problem with anyone elses beliefs.

I don't think stephen hawking stopped to think why he may be in that wheel chair in the first place. Maybe if he was a little more thankful... haha Just kidding. Agnosticism ftw.

Who knows, it's hard to say. I definitely believe that there is an unknown, possibly unknowable force that ties everything together, that, in short, brought everything into existence, and that keeps everything moving.

If the universe is random, then there is a chance for anything to happen, including our creation. to get a sense, look at the number pi. in the endless list of numbers beyond its decimal point exists every combination of 1-9 possible. if you search long enough, eventually you'll find your phone number listed.

so, if the universe is completely random, then any combination of things is possible. I'm still sticking with my belief in God

@ plethram

nice non-sequitur

@Sadistic

atheism and Agnosticism are not mutually exclusive they can be true at the same time. For example I consider myself to be an agnostic atheist. Which means I do not know if there is a god, but I do not believe that there is.

I hope this helps.

Look up agnostic atheism on wikipedia

Agnostic ftw. Who knows what's true, only one way to find out.

Hawking's god was already a deistic one so this doesn't surprise me, he probably just wanted to make it clear to those wrongfully quoting Christians

Black-hole Hawking strikes again! I'm amazed he hasn't been assasinated by some religious nut.
